Matauri Bay
We have had so many awesome holidays at Matauri Bay it has become one of our favourite spots. One of our most memorable experiences was swimming one evening when a pod of dolphins followed a boat into the beach and hung around in the Bay swimming all around us. It’s a great campsite right on the beach with everything you need. Read our full review below.

Location
Matauri Bay is approximately 30mins north of Kerikeri on the East coast of Northland. Head north on SH10, then turn right onto Matauri Bay Road about 10km out of Waipapa. The campsite is located right on the beach.

Facilities
Kitchen and ablution blocks are a bit dated but clean and tidy, with everything you need. Showers are warm and unlimited. There is no playground or tv room but the campsite is right on the beach so do you need a tv? There is a shop selling the essentials (barista coffee, beer, wine, milk and bread) plus fishing gear and petrol. In summer there is also a fish and chip shop on site. There is a beach launch at the campsite and a tractor that will launch and retrieve your boat for a fee. At the top of the road before you come down the hill into the Bay there is a bar, that sells fish and chips and next door a small store selling ice creams and other essentials.

Activities
You are right on the beach so the beach is your playground. Matauri Bay is a sheltered beach but you can nice little waves in the beach when an eastly swell combines with an offshore wind. There is a beach launch for fishing and water sports with the Stunning Cavalli Islands a short cruise away. There is good diving nearby and the Wreck of the Rainbow Warrior is one of the world's premier wreck dives. Fancy a walk and a stunning view of the Cavalli Islands? Climb up the hill to the Rainbow Warrior memorial. The track is steep but its only a short climb and the views are amazing.
