Muriwai Beach

Muriwai Beach is Wild West Coast at its best. If nature is your thing you won’t be bored. Beautiful black sand beach, great surf, fishing off the rocks, lots of walking tracks around the village, gannet colony.

  • Location

Muriwai Beach Campground is approximately 40 minutes west of Auckland city on the rugged west coast. Head out State Highway 16. Head out Muriwai Road and follow it through to the coast. The campsite is located just a short walk from the beach and easy walk to the Muriwai gannet colony.

  • Facilities

Everything is clean and well presented. Well stocked kitchen with outdoor BBQ and seating, good toilet facilities. BUT, the showers were amazing!!! Free, tonnes of pressure - honestly the best showers I’ve encountered at a campsite.

There isn’t a playgound onsite but there is a new skatepark nearby and lots of room around the campsite to kick a ball around.

  • Activities

    Muriwai kept us busy.

If you’re into nature then your in the right place. The Gannet colony is a must! The rocks a five minute walk at the southern end of the beach were a highlight. Really cool cave and interesting formations to explore.

Rock fishing was accessible at low tide with some really good fish to be caught. Note, if drone fishing is your thing, you need to drive north up the beach as you can’t fly a drone or drive on the beach near the campground,.

The surf was amazing the whole way along the coast and around the headland to Maori Bay.

There is a great one hour loop walk that starts next to the campground and lots of tracks around the town to the various lookouts.
